Joe Feddersen
Inhabited Landscapes 1 Sep - 16 Oct 2021 Joe Feddersen's new Froelick Gallery exhibition, titled Inhabited Landscapes, is inspired, in part, by drives around the Colville Reservation with the artist’s nonagenarian father - who recently remarked that there didn’t seem to be as many animals around as there used to be. The imagery in this show is the younger Feddersen’s response to that observation. Adorning layered, multi-technique print works and the curved walls of glass basket forms, he shows us the presence of much wildlife surrounding them; the rich variety of animals, birds, fish and insects that share the ecosystem of the Upper Columbia Plateau region. Elk and bee, bighorn sheep, spider, salmon, turkey vulture, coyote, porcupine, rattlesnake and grasshopper overlay and conjoin with one another in thickly-outlined forms, interacting in a bustling, interconnected world. Horses are heavily represented - large numbers roam wild in the region and are considered, for all their iconic beauty, a problematic non-native species that can consume much grazing land, tipping a delicate ecological balance.
Also present are a variety of human forms, as well indicators of conveniences and travails of contemporary life, such as vehicles, hydroelectric towers, radiation signs, and a COVID-19 molecule which appears in a number of works. Transparent layered ink rolls emulate the eerie haze of smoke from wildfires which devastated parts of the Reservation in the fall of 2020, also suggested by flame-colored glass. Read more -
