Almanza's statement about this exhibition:

Take me with you

The night I left Cuba, as is the custom to avoid the mal de ojo, I could not tell anyone I was leaving. I went to my favorite neighborhood bar, Melodrama, and sat with my friends and neighbors, bidding farewell to everything without being able to say goodbye.

My backpack was packed. It had to be light, I didn’t want to call too much attention to myself. I brought only the essential things. A pair of chancletas (sandals/flip-flops), some clothes, photos of my family and an icon of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre in my wallet. Inside a shoebox, I brought some small lithographs and my notebooks full of hundreds of pages of drawings, ideas and notes. There was my past, present and future.

That night, I wanted to take it all with me. The streets of Old Havana, the sounds of the neighbors getting up in the morning, the laughter of my friends falling out of bars. The losses and the promises. The rains of my Cuba and the waters of my Yáquimo River.

From the moment I left Cuba, I have not stopped walking, searching for what I left behind. Always searching for a way to not forget and to take it with me always.
