V. Maldonado presents mixed media works, paintings on canvas and paper inspired by being a life-long runner. Recalling early childhood pursuing imigration from Mexico to the U.S., and embracing recent adult years coursing Portland's forest trails and tracks, these new works act as maps of Maldonado's experiences, thoughts, and emotions. It can be said that runners sometimes race to something and sometimes run from something, Maldonado mines life's highs and lows with this visually brilliant new series.
About the work Maldonado notes:
"My dad ran from the migra and my mom ran from the patriarchy! I come from lifelong runners! Drawing as “to raise up or out” - like drawing water from a deep well, or drawing your sword or arrow in combat, or, to bring together or call in or call out - as in drawing attention with our actions. Running is how I draw myself."
