Bartow made this self portrait drawing after watching the play "Rhinocerous," by French avant-garde playright Eugène Ionesco (written 1959). The Red Octopus Theater Company staged the play at the Marine Sciences Center in Newport, OR. Bartow was a constant reader, this is one of the earliest known examples of Bartow's "transformation" type drawing and taking inspiration from literature for his art.
