The painting is illustrated in the 2021 book "Terrell James: Threshhold," authors Stephanie Buhmann and Ann Dumas, on pp.120-121. The book was published by Cadogan Books/Cadogan Contemporary, London. Authors Buhmann write about this painting in the book on pages 114-115: "It was inspired by James's visit to Tongli, an ancient town in the Wujiang district in China. The painting's sparse blue marks allow the viewer to imagine the floating quality of this unique place, which is lined with ancient buildings and bridges that lead over continuous canals. It is a place that reads almost otherworldly to contemporary eyes. There are no cars and all travel is done by foot. 'Tongli seems to traverse time,' James explains, and one finds this elusive quality reflected in the way she allows the paint to hover above the stretched linen, which offers a supple flaxen ground. As a result, there are different spaces in this composition, established by the rich oil paint that saturates the support."
Buhmann's commentary on sense of place continues "Place is where you are, sometimes that means physiclly or while drawing from memory. Occasionally, it means where we projet ourselves through our imagination and inspirations."
