Andrew Alba is one of six children. His only sister, Michelle Alba became an elementary school teacher on the “West Side” of Salt Lake City, Utah. The West Side is made up of predominantly Black and Brown families, very similar to where Alba grew up. This painting is an homage to his sister and to her students on the West Side. Knowing there may not be dinner waiting for them at home, her students often stop by the corner store for low-priced snacks or a quick microwavable meal. Many of these children may have an incarcerated parent, or a single mother, or their parents work long hours and will not be home to cook, or they just simply cannot afford more than a meal a day. The 7/11 for these children represents community and abundance and many times may feel like a secondary home.
