"I expect great art to move me, to touch me, to express something meaningful. I want art to affect my life. I want to laugh, cry, be mystified or enlightened. I want to be profoundly educated. Great art is often about the mythic, if we understand the mythic to mean the great unknowables--Birth, Life, Death, Creation, God. Art can convey these ideas, whether it is naturalistic, abstract, or something in between." --Kay WalkingStick
These Native American works included in the group exhibition were selected by Kay WalkingStick (Cherokee), a painter who can boast being the first Native American included in Janson's History of Art. The Heard has collected 3,600 pieces by 20th-century Native artists and 47 are displayed here, works by such artists as Rick Bartow, Joe Feddersen, Fred Kabotie, Helen Hardin, Norman Akers, Andrew Van Tsinajinnie, Patrick Robert Desjarlait, George Morrison, Carl Sweezy, Faye Heavyshield, and Truman Lowe. The exhibit ran from November 2, 2002-March 9, 2003.
