My approach is intuitive, chaotic, and circuitous. Rarely do I begin a painting with a preliminary plan or tactic. Having said that, I have a lot of ideas and because I try to avoid making the same painting over and over I tend to start each painting in a different manner. It is a challenging process and there are no short cuts. I change the painting many times, erasing and obliterating previous imagery until a structure of sorts begins to emerge and resonate on multiple fronts. Contending with the paint in and of itself has its own rewards and also creates a path forward, as well as wrangling with formal constraints like color, shape, line, etc.
The Back of Beyond is the title for this current body of work. It is a reference to any real or imagined, remote or distant area. An apt metaphor for the distance I go to make a painting that feels authentic. I am interested in a varied vocabulary: geometric forms and patterns, gesture and/or organic shapes to include references to landscape and the body. I like to think of these paintings as interior images that I arrive at by chance.
