Artist Statement:
“Mijo, yo le prometo que cuando usted cumpla los 12 años lo voy a dejar salir adonde usted quiera. Prométeme que no vas a andar bandolereando, ni metiéndote en problemas, ¿está bien mijo?”
“Esta bien, abuela, te lo prometo”
A los 12 años yo podía salir a donde quiera en el pueblo. Aprender la viveza de la calle era crucial para sobrevivir en el pueblo. Las enseñanzas de mi abuela siempre me han ayudado y guiado en momentos difíciles. Esta serie de 12 autorretratos está inspirada en esas enseñanzas y proverbios que yo memorizaba como un manual cuando andaba solo. Aquí, las lanzo como una oración con la esperanza de que siempre te mantenga a salvo y te
guíe de regreso a casa.

“My child, I promise you that when you turn 12, I will let you go whenever you want. Promise me you won't go around causing trouble or getting into fights. Ok, my child?”
“Yes, grandma, I promise.”
When I was 12 years old, my grandma let me go wherever I wanted in our small town. Being street smart was crucial for surviving. The teachings of my grandma have always helped and guided me in difficult moments. This series of 12 self portraits are inspired by these teachings and proverbs that I memorized like a manuel for when I was alone. Here, I cast them like a spell in the hopes that they will always keep you safe and guide you home.
