Orlando Almanza: Gente de Río

3 September - 12 October 2024
"This series is inspired by two important communities in my life, and examines how time is not always linear, how memories from the past often overlap with present experiences, and provide insight into future moments." -Orlando Almanza

Orlando Almanza returns to Froelick Gallery with his latest body of work Gente de Río. These monumental sized group-portraiture paintings are based on precious moments of rest. His beloved models are the people and communities he has met throughout his early life in Cuba. The inspiration begins with family and neighbors from his home in Amancio, a small town in the Las Tunas Province located in the south countryside of Cuba. The second influence comes from the city of Havana specifically, Calle Amargura "Bitterness Street". After leaving his hometown, Calle Amargura was the place where Orlando found community within new friends and neighbors. In both places Orlando noticed he was surrounded by family and friends who were struggling with systematic and historical issues that were well outside of their control.

Living in the present moment, surrounded by nature and loved ones is where Orlando Alamanza finds beauty and pride. Gente de Río is a celebration of his various communities and homes. The paintings all share a similar atmosphere and palette inspired by the river close to Orlando's hometown, Río Yáquimo. In the context of these paintings the Yáquimo River represents the cycle of life- keeping Orlando and his people connected to their ancestors and those yet to come.
