Bartow finished and dated this work on 12/31/2005; he signed and dated it on the back side of the canvas and signed it on the lower right canvas face. Bartow made works inspired by dreams and visions throughout his life. This is the first of a seris of three "Little Nightmare" paintings, the subsequent paintings were made in 2006- the second depicts a female with an owl head, and the third depicts a face close-up with a hawk face to the side. This transformation painting includes a male body with an over-sized hawk or eagle head, and it is floating in a mysterious, dark field, it includes several areas where Bartow painted old Germanic lettering in bright red. We have unfortunately not been able to translate the words- yet. If you can translate any of this- we'd be thrilled to hear from you.
This paintings was included in all 11 museums of the touring 2015-2019 retrospective “Rick Bartow: Things You Know But Cannot Explain,” which was organized by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon.
It is framed black molding in a "float" style.
