The artist recalls their father proclaiming there were "no mothers" in the migrant fields they were working in. Possibly an attempt by V.'s father to give his child a tool of survival. Perhaps a way to harden V and to reinforce being a "hard worker", a stereotype usually related to Mexican bodies in labor. However, the idea disturbed V. It was militant, aggressive and hostile.
There are in fact women who work the migrant fields alongside men. Unfortunately, these women are often in danger of sexual abuse, violence and misogyny.
