Dirk Bach: Recent Work

14 April - 27 June 2020

Froelick Gallery is pleased to premiere the work of accomplished artist and art historian Dirk Bach, who is showing in Portland for the first time. Active for over sixty years, Bach has exhibited his work nationally while also maintaining an art historical practice and teaching career. The exhibition on view, Recent Work, features twelve large-scale colored pencil works, which represent three distinct bodies of work produced between 2007 to 2016. While the content and color palette varies, the scale, medium, and method remains consistent across all twelve works. The artist employs a labor-intensive collage-based aesthetic incorporating photographic slides in order to construct dynamic compositions that are rendered in axonometric perspective with subtle shading and modeling techniques. Bach’s work often makes reference to art historical imagery in both content and technique; for example, the majority of work in his oeuvre employs a unique spatial perspective ubiquitous throughout Asian art history, a subject in which he specializes.
