In The Rockies presents Kay WalkingStick's fascination with the geography and history of the Western United States - the enormous region known as the Rocky Mountains. The exhibition comprises twelve paintings on panel and paper, and four rare prints created at Crow's Shadow. We are featuring several sites and events central to the life of Chief Joseph. The artist embarks on extensive research and lengthy visits to each of the locations in her works. The watercolors, sketchbooks and photogrpahs she creates on site are the original source material for her large scale paintings and prints made in the studio. WalkingStick is considered a luminary of Contemporary American Art and Contemporary Native American Art. Her career spans decades and many accolades which still continue, key among them: In 1995 the university art history textbook standard H.W. Janson's History of Art included her; The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian organized the retrospective and monograph co-curated by Ash-Milby and David W. Penney which toured from 2015 to 2018, and the Whitney Museum of American Art recently acquired her 1972 masterpiece "April Contemplating May."
