Original Black frame with plexiglass 66 x 54" Animal transformation and self portraits are Rick Bartow's most famous and most often used imagery. Rick identified with dogs and ravens as nearest to some of his own personality traits, so one will find many self-portraits with his face and the body of a dog or a raven. Bartow drew this ferocious dog 10 years after he found sobriety. The title "Against Instinct" proposes the struggle of the dog trying to not be a dog, but could also allude to the artist's own internal battles to conquer PTSD and alcohol.
