Victor Maldonado :Critical Masses
Claudio Tschopp : Fields
September 2 - September 27, 2003
First Thursday, September 4 5-8:30pm
Punchy, humorous, pop-inspired cultural commentary is found in works by Victor Maldonado. Born in Changuitiro, Michuacan, Mexico, and growing up in the San Juaquin Valley of California he has a rich personal story to tell. Never at a loss for words, this exhibit addresses multi-cultural assimilation, consumerism, patriotism... with paintings and hand-stamped prints. He is a recent graduate of California College of Art and Craft, and now beginning the MFA program at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Join us to welcome Claudio Tschopp who recently moved to Portland from Basel, Switzerland. His reductive paintings reflect this time of transition and work at establishing roots: suitcases and freeways are juxtaposed with solid rock forms. His fascination with the Portland's urban growth boundary questions where the city ends and nature begins. When farmland is so manipulated by man this line is blurred. He received a B.F.A. from the Academy of Fine Art, Venice, Italy in 1990. In 1994 he recieved the new talent/purchase prize from the National Versicherung, Switzerland.
