Michael Schultheis

Michael Schultheis returns to Froelick Gallery with his recent body of work, Universal Couplings of Archimedes. Paying tribute in these bright acrylic canvases to the great Greek thinker Archimedes of Syracuse (c. 287 BCE – c. 212 BCE), Schultheis paints scrawled mathematical formulae and linear forms riding crests of roiling color. Exploring the corresponding geometry his titles hint at- lacunae, trammels, pinions- these diagrammatic elements are a product of an inquisitive mind at play. Transcending the discipline's perceived rigidity, Schultheis presents mathematics as a living element active in the world, as an avenue for describing the material realm as well as our own human systems both emotional and corporeal.
