Froelick Gallery is pleased to welcome Bo Joseph for his first West Coast solo exhibition. A California native and graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Bo Joseph currently lives and works in New York City.
Showcasing a selection of drawings, paintings and small bronze cast sculpture, Become From Someplace Else
is a continuation of Joseph’s abstract explorations of cultural archetypes, both past and present. Referencing books, auction catalogs and ethnographic journals, he creates stencils from imagery of ritualistic idols and ceremonial objects. The resulting hybridized imagery reflects contemporary cultural interdependence.
Social Studies combines Victor Maldonado’s interest in consumer culture and the traditional role of painting in historical context. Using commercial imagery in monochromatic compositions, he reconceptualizes the minimalist painting as a billboard for subtle comment on the American ritual of excess. Maldonado explains, “the scale and treatment of the works call attention to the silhouettes created by modernist abstraction and also retell the stories of my Mexican migrant experience.”
